Housekeeping

The department and process that cleans and prepares rooms between stays.

Housekeeping is the department (or, in a small hotel, simply the process) responsible for cleaning and preparing rooms, public areas and linen. It tracks each room through standard statuses: occupied or vacant, dirty, clean, inspected, and out of order or out of service.

It is one of the processes that most needs tight coordination with the front desk, which assigns rooms, often with a narrow window between checkout and the next arrival.

In practice: make room status visible in real time to the whole team, not just housekeepers. Most front desk frustrations (guests waiting for a room, a room assigned that is not ready) come from a status that was updated on paper or late, not from slow cleaning.
