A stop sell closes a room type, a rate plan or the whole hotel to new bookings on one or more channels for specific dates, without marking any room as occupied. It is used when the hotel is close to full, to protect inventory for a group or a higher-rated segment, or to stop a low-margin channel from selling the last rooms.
It differs from putting a room out of order, which reflects a physical problem with the room: a stop sell is a commercial decision.
In practice: use stop sells deliberately and review them regularly. Channels closed "just in case" and then forgotten are lost revenue with no real reason, and on high-demand dates an MLOS or a higher rate is often a better tool than closing outright.
